NDP candidate to be acclaimed

Actor David Sparrow will be acclaimed Thursday night as the NDP candidate in federal riding of Don Valley West.

A resident of the riding for the last 19 years, Sparrow is the only candidate to throw his hat in the ring.

The riding is currently not represented by any party after Liberal incumbent John Godfrey stepped down July 1 to take over as headmaster of Toronto French School.

Sparrow is running because he said he can no longer sit idly by while so many hard-working families get left out of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative agenda.

"It's time to speak up for the voters of Don Valley West by standing up to Harper," he said.

Sparrow blames what he calls the weak and divided Liberals for allowing Harper to continue in power.

However, Sparrow's nomination comes as talk of a federal election is revving up.

This week, Liberal leader Stephane Dion hinted at a fall election.

Sparrow is an actor, writer and producer who has appeared in almost 100 movie and TV roles, including Star Trek Voyager and Corner Gas. He has written for the stage, screen and radio.

He is married to Lisa, a nurse at Toronto East General Hospital. Their two daughters are graduates of Leaside High School.

The nomination meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the community meeting room of Loblaw Superstore at 825 Don Mills Rd. at Eglinton Avenue.

Guest speakers will include Ken Neumann, the national director for Canada United Steelworkers, and Karl Pruner, president of the ACTRA actors union in Toronto.
