World Percheron Congress now on

People are invited to watch the giants of the horse world perform at the Horse Palace and Ricoh Coliseum July 22 to 26.

This year's World Percheron Congress, a showcase for an ancient warrior breed of horses, will see the 2,000 pound "heavies" go through their paces, demonstrating their versatility as sport and pleasure mounts in addition to better-known roles in transportation, field work and business promotion.

Organizers have signed up 105 exhibitors with more than 400 horses from across the U.S. and Canada.

"The World Percheron Congress is like the Olympics for this breed," said Kim Davidson, the show's manager and co-chair in a release. "We want people to see how much these surprising giants can do, everything from jumping and hitching to skidding logs out of the bush."

The annual congress is a major livestock industry event, giving exhibitors an opportunity to demonstrate breeding and training know-how under the eye of professional judges. Competitions include single-, six- and eight-horse hitch classes, Western and English trail riding, jumping and agricultural events. Plowing matches will take place at a separate, off-site facility.

"It's a first for Toronto," Davidson said.

The Percheron was developed in France during the Middle Ages for carrying armored knights into battle. In the 1800s, Percherons became popular among teamsters for moving heavy loads, and in the agricultural industry where they worked in the fields. Today, the bred continues to find new roles as sport and pleasure horses.

Admission is free. Spectators are asked to bring one non-perishable food item for the Daily Bread Food Bank. Visit www.ontariopercherons.ca for details.
